前作「幸せ最高．．．」、前々作「遍路」に比べると、かなりブラック。
光代(母)は、夫に逃げられて以来、過度の愛情の方向を息子たちに向ける。
長男は、そのストレスから妻・千鶴子への暴力で解消。
次男は、妻の蓉子を身代わりにして家を出てしまう。
義父を愛してしまった妻・江尻アキ。
誰とでも寝てしまう女・赤堀ヒロ子
千鶴子は、夫の暴力は姑・光代のせいと、光代に決定的なダメージを与える、ある作戦を実行します。十数年の姑への恨みつらみいが一気に爆発する場面で、恐ろしいけれど爽快。こういう役やると松永嬢はすばらしいですね。
赤堀ヒロ子に対する別称、「セフティネット」やら「優しいアソコ」はナイスな言いまわし。赤堀ヒロ子はマリア様なのかぁ♪
自分の居場所を見つけたい蓉子は、夫が失踪しても夏目家に居続けます。光代の介護に、居場所を見つけることになるのですが、自分(蓉子)を頼るしかない＆自分(蓉子)の思い通りになる存在としての呆けてしまった光代ですから、２４時間テレビでは決して扱われないであろう介護の様子（でも、お互い無理がないのだから、ある意味正しい介護の姿じゃないかとも思います））。
江尻アキの義父の死因は、事故による心不全だけれども、そのシチュエーションを作り出したのは千鶴子．．．というのは深読みのし過ぎかな。
ラストがすがすがしいので見終わった直後は気分がよいのだけれど、思い返してみるとかなり怖い。
